What if I hate running a membership and feel trapped?

What if I don’t enjoy running a membership and feel trapped? A lovely lady asked me this a few days ago and it really resonated with me.

I gave her the same advice I give my clients, which is this:

Create a PILOT or BETA membership. You can tell your members, or not. But in your head, you know you're giving it 3 months, or 6 months to see if you like it. During that time, you run it as if it's going to exist longterm.

Why do this? Because your subconscious, with its mind monkeys, conjures up all the reasons it won't work, everything that will go wrong and all the reasons you'll hate and regret it, even before you've given it a chance. If you tell yourself it's a pilot membership for a few months, your mind monkeys can't use 'being trapped' as an excuse not to do it.

If, after 3 or 6 months you really love it, keep going.

If you're not loving it, say 'hello, lovely members. I wanted to try this membership for a little while, to see if it worked for me. For a few reasons, it's not quite right for me at the moment, so I'm going to close it at the end of this month. No more membership payments will be taken. I'd love to help you in other ways, though, and I think you'll love this [other way of working with me]."

It doesn't mean you'll never have a membership. It just means that membership wasn't right for you at this time.

It happens. I've closed a couple of memberships for exactly that reason. Remember, too, that YOU get to design your membership to suit YOU, so see if the bits you hate can be changed.

Hope that helps!

Love, Claire xx
